Vasko Vassilev - a world-class talent with a violin, through which he "speaks a universal language".

Vasko Vassilev is a world-class violinist who speaks through his instrument in a universal language. One of Bulgaria’s most renowned musicians, he is currently Concertmaster of the Royal Opera House in London. This November, he toured 18 cities across Bulgaria with his new documentary film.

What is your favourite Ford model?
The Kuga. Last year, I toured Bulgaria in one, and there are three reasons why I became a fan: the excellent sound system, the impressively intelligent headlights and the exceptional ride comfort. We were also the only ones in our group who did not get a flat tyre.

And your favourite route?
To the next concert.

Petrol or electric?
Hybrid. It is good to have a choice.

What is the most interesting thing that has happened to you on the road?
We came across a real wolf in the Rhodope Mountains. I am still not sure who ran away faster — the wolf or us.

Three places you love?

  • My favourite chapel in Mallorca, near Valldemossa

  • “Chushka i Prazhka” in Samokov, by the Iskar River

  • Tsarevo

What is your favourite moment of the day?
After a concert.

What truly challenges you?
The way traffic rules are observed in India and Bulgaria, especially compared with Japan and the UK.

What do you consider a true personal achievement?
Performing Paganini at Arena Armeec in Sofia in 2016.

What makes you step on the gas?
Burgas.

What makes you hit the brakes?
A pedestrian crossing. Every time.

Which song, book or film has impressed you recently?
I really like Sam Smith and the level of production behind his music. I also read Pachinko by Min Jin Lee and then watched the screen adaptation.

What is the credo that guides you through life?
Loyalty and dignity are the two qualities I value most, and I always try to live by them.
